Since 1 January 2026 the Residential Rental Licensing programme covers the whole city and every rental property with one to four units. The licence itself is free. Not having one can cost up to $1,500.

The programme is city-wide since January 2026 — it is no longer limited to particular wards — and the City says it runs until 31 December 2028.
Since January 2026, every applicant must complete a one-time online educational module. Once, not every year — but until it is done the application is not finished, and with a twelve-week queue behind it that is not a step to discover late.
Conditions covering property maintenance, occupancy, insurance and compliance are attached to every licence, and Enforcement and By-law Services inspect against them.
The City says failing to apply for a licence or comply with the programme can result in fines and penalties, and that non-compliant rental properties can face penalties of up to $1,500. Set against a licence that costs nothing, there is no version of this where not applying is the cheaper choice.
If you rent out one to four residential units in Brampton, yes. Since 1 January 2026 the programme is city-wide and covers single dwelling units, two-unit dwellings with one additional residential unit, and multi-unit dwellings including triplexes, fourplexes and garden suites. The licence must be obtained before operating.

Longer than you would expect. In September 2026 the rental licensing office's own auto-reply said that due to a high number of renewal and new applications it is taking approximately 12 weeks to review applications. Apply well before you need the room filled.
